Professional Development


Providing high quality, accessible professional development for school personnel, social service providers and government officials, the Alliance’s educational workshops and training programs focus on sexual orientation and gender identity within a broader social justice and anti-oppression framework. Alliance staff and volunteers work closely with participants to create specially tailored sessions for each context that are both engaging and educational.  To schedule a Professional Development workshop click here to fill out the Intake Form. 


Professional Development Topics

“Creating Affirming Learning Environments” is a 90-minute minimum, introductory workshop geared towards classroom teachers and student support staff. It focuses on the experiences and needs of LGBTQ+ young people in school settings. It includes opportunities for reflection, dialogue, and skill building. It can be tailored to meet the needs of a school or district.

“The Role of the School Social Worker, School Psychologist, and School Counselor in Supporting LGBTQ+ Students” is a 2-hour minimum workshop that focuses on the specific role of student support staff in stewarding an environment that is safe and affirming for LGBTQ+ students. It includes:

  • Examining school systems such as curriculum, discipline, and school traditions to identify the social, emotional, and educational impact they have on LGBTQ+ students
  • Activities using guidance from professional organizations such as National Association of School Psychologists to shape professional practice

“Gender Inclusive Schools: Best Practices and Legal Obligations for Supporting Transgender Students” is a 3-hour workshop directed towards Regional, District, and School Level Administrators. It includes:

  • A foundational understanding of gender identity and the responsibility of schools to serve students in accordance with gender identity
  • An overview of the changing legal landscape around transgender students' rights and schools’ responsibility for serving all students, including transgender and gender expansive students
  • Examine legal protections of transgender students' rights
  • Examples of districts that have implemented effective and affirming Administrative Procedures in Illinois

The Alliance also customizes workshops to meet the needs of Districts and Schools. Our areas of expertise include:

  • Healthy identity development
  • Supportive youth-adult partnerships
  • Restorative justice practices and bullying prevention
  • Forming Genders and Sexualities Alliances (GSAs) with students
  • Supporting transgender and gender expansive students
  • Legal responsibilities for serving LGBTQ+ students
  • Addressing gender and sexual orientation in early childhood classrooms: developmentally appropriate practices
  • Understanding systems of oppression and privilege
  • Curricular development for LGBTQ+ inclusive lesson plans
  • School-based policy and administrative procedure creation and support

These training topics can be adapted in a multitude of ways:

  • Training time: 90mins - 6 hours (the Alliance can also provide 1- and 2-day trainings upon request)
  • Number of participants: 10-400
  • Level of participant knowledge: beginner to advanced
  • Cultural context

The base structure for our professional development workshops is as follows:

  • $200/hour up to a three-hour training
  • $500 for a three-hour training
  • $650 for a four-hour training
  • $800 for a five-hour training
  • $1000 for a full day training


  • No charge for travel in a 40-mile radius of Alliance offices
  • For a radius greater than 40-miles of Alliance offices we ask for reimbursement of our travel at a rate of $0.54/mile

The Alliance also offers consulting services for schools and Districts regarding violence prevention, creating inclusive curriculum, policy development, etc. Our consulting rates are as follows:

  • $100/hour in person
  • $50/hour remote
  • Additional expenses may be incurred

We offer a sliding scale to schools and districts for all services where cost would be prohibitive.
